My Cancer Journey by Meryl Marshall
When you were first diagnosed with cancer did you have many symptoms and if so how long had they persisted before you went to a doctor?
I found a lump in my breast during a self exam. I saw something on a morning show where they were suggesting a different method…kind of like going up and down rather than in a circle. They referred to it as a ‘ribbon method.’ I finished my cup of coffee and headed up the stairs to take a shower. I decided at that moment to try the new method.
I immediately felt the lump way below my right armpit. I was shocked but remained calm. I had to wait the weekend until I could get to my doctor that Monday. Mind you that just a few months before he conducted a breast exam without any findings as well as my having a negative mammogram.
He examined me and said he did not think that it was anything to worry about but I had to get another mammo and have it read immediately by a radiologist. The radiologist was concerned, so I was sent to a breast surgeon for a biopsy. I was shocked when the results came back as an early stage but aggressive form of breast cancer.
Can you offer any words of encouragement for patients who have been recently diagnosed with cancer?
A positive outlook is crucial and I suggest that you do whatever you can to make yourself comfortable. Treatment is draining and getting enough rest is imperative. Let others take care of the day to day chores. Maintain your strength for a walk outdoors. Fresh air is uplifting. Stay away from places that are loaded with germs.
Had you tried alternative treatments, other than what was initially prescribed to you?
I researched and found a doctor that met my criteria, in a facility close to my home so that I would not have to travel far. After a chemo treatment, the fatigue is overwhelming and you do not want to travel a long trip home.
After my choice and initial consultation, I decided to let the doctor navigate my care. My husband and I always asked many questions but I felt comfortable to trust my physician. I did not find it necessary to find alternative treatments as I felt it would interfere with my doctor’s plan. I guess it was the right decision as I am cancer free for 12 years now.
After the course of treatment, I committed to a healthier lifestyle which includes regular exercise, eating clean which includes a high proportion of my diet being vegetarian. I choose organic foods as much as possible. I also do my best to keep stress to a minimum.
Were you able to turn your cancer fight into something positive and if so what did you do?
I had several people support me during my care and I promised myself that I would pay it forward to others facing this horrific disease. I have volunteered many times to take someone for treatment, do their food shopping, bring a healthy meal and help with errands.
I am the founder of Hynt Beauty, which is a natural cosmetics brand. I support various charities that help those going through treatment. It is very important to me to provide quality products that do not compromise someone’s health as well as having the opportunity to help others.
